Dorina’s story
From a village on the Adriatic to the heart of a big, loving family.
Born in Belej, island of Cres
Dorina was born in Belej, a small stone village of olive groves and dry-stone walls on the island of Cres, within the Town of Mali Lošinj in Croatia’s Kvarner Gulf. She grew up with the sea, the sun and the scent of wild sage and pine.
A family with deep Italian roots
Her family carried deep Italian roots, and her mother and grandmother passed down recipes that had already lived through generations — hand-rolled pasta, soups cooked low and slow and desserts made with simple ingredients but endless heart. To this day she speaks English, Italian and Croatian.
A new life in America
When she came to America, she brought those traditions with her — cooking for family gatherings, holidays, birthdays and school events, always with the instinctive touch of someone who knows that food brings people closer.
Wife of Robert Benvin
She built a loving home with her husband, Robert Benvin, whose memory the family holds close. Together they raised two children, Richard (Rich) and Michelle.
Mother & Nonna
Family always came first. Dorina gave her time, her talents and her heart — sacrificing so much for others. Then came grandchildren, and a new name: Nonna Do.
Orchids, art & award-winning displays
Her home became a gallery of orchids — Brassias, Dendrobiums, Cattleyas, Oncidiums and Phalaenopsis — shown in award-winning displays and captured in her own photography.
A legacy preserved
Her 115 family recipes live on in Nonna Do’s Italian Kitchen, and her orchid wisdom in The Art of Orchids. This website is our thank-you.
