The Five Basics of Happy Orchids

Purple Phalaenopsis orchid

Orchids are often treated as mysterious. Dorina’s approach is gentler: observe the plant, understand its rhythm and change one thing at a time.

Most household Phalaenopsis prefer bright indirect light, thorough watering followed by drainage, airy roots and a stable environment. Silver roots often signal it is time to check for watering; plump green roots usually mean the plant is hydrated.

Five calm basics

  1. Bright indirect light
  2. Water thoroughly, then drain
  3. Airy orchid medium
  4. Moderate humidity and gentle air movement
  5. Patience between blooms

New root tips and fresh leaves are progress, too. The bloom is not the whole plant.
